Spotify announced on Friday that it will stop putting political advertisements on its platforms. This decision has been taken in the wake of upcoming US elections in January 2020. The move is aimed to prevent any attempts to divert the attention of general public through ads. Social media has a potential to influence the public opinion and hence Spotify will suspend political advertisements on its platform.
Spotify Technology S.A. is an international media service provider of Swedish origin. It provides online audio streaming service via Spotify. It provides audio, video and podcasts from recorded labels and various media companies. The decision to suspend advertisements will extend to Spotify as well as its other supported platforms.
Due to the upcoming US elections, the campaigns are already in high swing. Many other social media platforms have also imposed some similar kind of impositions on the usage of their platforms. Uploading or sharing of any controversial or politically motivated content will invite actions by these platforms. Misinformation, political ads having false or misleading claims will have to pass through proper scrutiny. Twitter, Google, Facebook have already taken such measures.
“At this point in time, we do not yet have the necessary level of robustness in our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content”, a Spotify spokeswoman said in a statement to Reuters. “We will reassess this decision as we continue to evolve our capabilities.”
Due to the ban on various other social media platforms, many political ads have diverted their path towards Spotify. Hence this the reason why Spotify will suspend political advertisements on its platforms. Any person directly or indirectly related to political candidate, elected and appointed officials, political parties, political action committees(PACs) and Super PACs will be covered under this move by Spotify.
